If The Fates Allow

Writer's picture: BelleBelle

June's Owl Crate box is called If The Fates Allow. With Percy Jackson being one of my first huge book loves, I was really looking forward to what this box would hold, and it is certainly one of my favorites.

It's always exciting to get a book in a subscription box that is already on my to-read list. This was absolutely the most unique one I have received as well. The dust jacket is clear, overlaying white designs over the holographic foil covers. I have never seen one like it before and hope that more continue to come out. It appears to fall into the category of modern twists on classic myths, and I have heard nothing but good things about it.

Necklace - Percy Jackson

Here is the item I was waiting for :) A beautiful, simple design with Percy's sword, Anaklusmos, on one side and the sign for Annabeth's mother, the owl, on the other. It came in a velvet drawstring bag with gold writing reminding us that "the sea does not like to be restrained."

I have read the first book in this series and honestly didn't love it. It is one that I had high expectations for and read when I had a lot going on so definitely one I want to give another try. Regardless, I love the format of this pin, and how it looks like a miniature scrapbook. And the front cover (though not an official eagle) is quite Ravenclaw reminiscent.

Another that has been on my list for quite a while. Just holding the mirror makes me feel like I am in a Greek myth. It has a good weight to it and delicate writing of the quote "I would know him in death, at the end of the world" on its face.

I was a little surprised to see this included at first, until I realized who the author was. I read this years ago, before the Raven Cycle was published and got popular so I didn't put together they were both written by Maggie Stiefvater. I thought this was quite a clever inclusion, practical and a bit niche so I certainly don't already have a picnic blanket like this already. And I appreciated the subtle connection of using this on the beach, like the beach that the horses run on in the story.

Trivet - Neil Gaiman

This was my least favorite item in the box. I don't have great use for a trivet at the moment and the design, though well done, is just not super my style. I like the quote though and it certainly fits the theme. Objectively there is nothing wrong with it, just not a personal preference.

A final image to try and show off the gorgeous rainbows that reflect off the covers of this book. It looks and feels magical just holding it.

My expectations for Owl Crate boxes are getting almost worryingly high.
