Gods and Vikings

Writer's picture: BelleBelle

I was pretty disappointed to hear about the end of the YA subscription box from LitJoy. I would have continued subscribing if the box was still being made but had less interesting the To Bee Read one. And so my final LitJoy box was Gods and Vikings.

Reading the description feels like this will be a good read for those who grew up loving Percy Jackson. Possibly even some The Name of the WInd vibes, although I haven't read it yet to confirm. Another note that the color they chose for the edges is amazing, and all of the other design choices and artwork really speak to the theme of this box.

Beanie - Percy Jackson

I am going to label this one as Percy Jackson even though it is tagged as "Camp Demigod". This was the item I was most excited by, and was very satisfied with the way it looks, feels, and how warm it keeps my head.

Keychain - Goddess of the Moon

This item is not from a specific book but just the figure from legendary deities. I love the design, and the way the edges are cut so intricately. I would be worried it may scratch easier than I would like using as an actual keychain so for now it is on display with some of my enamel pins. But perhaps it would hold up, as it seems pretty well made otherwise.

Puzzle - Hercules

Like the keychain, this is not from a specific book but the legend of Hercules as a whole. I definitely felt it was inspired by the Disney animated movie and really enjoyed how the artwork was adapted. I did get to the bag first and was a little panicked that there was no reference photo, but there is in fact one lower in the box. Looking forward to putting this together!

Sticker - Thor

Like a previous sticker I have received from LitJoy I wasn't super impressed with the quality. I felt it would have been much more satisfying to get a vinyl sticker, and would make it more versatile as well. The design was also just not my style, so overall the weakest point of the box for me personally.

Bookmark - Persephone

I thought using the two aesthetics of Persephone was a really clever way to use a lenticular (new word I learned) design for the bookmark. I was also very impressed by how clear each side of it was! Every bookmark like this I have seen before has seemed to have hints of the "opposite" design no matter which way you tilt it but not this one.

A lined notebook with the cover based on the cover of The Neverending Story. I have not read or watched this but have certainly heard of it. Even with no connection to the story, this journal is gorgeous. It has engraved gold letters in the leather cover and five metal inlaid designs. I imagine it would make a fantastic writing inspiration journal or for quotes and thoughts while reading.

Adventure Card - Valkyrie

Despite also not being associated with a specific book, this was my favorite Adventure Card. The colors and the art style are just gorgeous. It makes me want to look up any books that are about valkyries (the closest I have read has been A Court of Silver Flames) and add them to my to-read list.

I did enjoy this box and the variety of items it included. It was definitely different from other LitJoy boxes, given how many were not tied to a specific book or series. Due to this it didn't really feel like a big "finale" YA box for them, although that may not have been the goal. I have really enjoyed the boxes, and although I can no longer recommend this specific subscription, LitJoy's other boxes I am sure are worth checking out.
